within, without

Painted Lady Butterflies grown from larvae to lepidoptera over the course of the eight week San Francisco Summer Undergraduate Residency. The butterflies emerged from their chrysalis the day before the group show. As they opened their wings for the first time, a drop of blood fell from the outer cocoon and was caught on a piece of raw canvas laid at the bottom of a mock-up of the Diego Rivera Gallery donation box. During the installation, the butterflies were released in the courtyard of SFAI, and the flowers were emptied around the box, drawing new boundaries between the audience and the piece. All parts of the installation were found in the studio spaces at SFAI, and all flowers were gathered between Russian Hill and Coit Tower encompassing the view from the studio loft.

The stain paintings integrated the themes of universal transformation along the raw canvas using the golden ratio as a reference point for the spiral of transformation of the butterfly through the chrysalis stage and beyond.
