Aquarius New Moon 🌙

she gets you on her wavelength and she lets the river answer (Roberta flack, Suzanne)

happy new moon in Aquarius!

I took some time today to slow down. This is the last new moon in Aquarius we will have with Saturn in its preferred home sign currently at 24° of Aquarius for another 30 years (sitting pretty at the personal degree of my Midheaven!). Embracing the pace this day offered, I decided to break my own rules and deliver this post a little late. The New Moon went exactly ‘new’ at 3:56 pm eastern time (for anyone curious). Set your intentions today through Monday to get the most out of this Aquarian moment.

New Moon in Aquarius rumination

Is there a topic/place/group/person/project… in your life that could benefit from your perspective? Is there a vantage point that you have discovered through learning what you are not in order to understand how your refusal of certain societal or structural ‘norms’ which shapes the way you see things unfolding… reveal the possibility of a visionary path?

Aquarian’s are contrarians, they’re here to disrupt the status quo in order to alter traditions & bring about a future ideal. Opposite to the sign of Leo (the performer in the spotlight, ruled by the Sun), Aquarius orients itself from the outside looking in. In order to find it’s contrary vantage point, it must first come from a group or system in which it then intellectually identifies the faults & forms it’s own ideal of how things could be if other’s could see beyond the bright lights on center stage. Aquarius is in the peripherals, understanding life as it is in order to find ways to move towards a higher function. (Aquarius also rules the internet & technology)

“One cannot create beauty; one can only create circumstances favorable to it.”

— Rainer Maria Rilke (Moon, Saturn & Mars in Aquarius) + a poem by Rilke “The Panther”

Aquarius knows that to run the show, you need more than just the star performer. You need to check the angles, you need a stage crew, you need a writer to guide the unfolding story. A story is only as good as its ability to set the scene to take us to places we haven’t been before.

So… we all have Aquarius in our charts somewhere. What is your vantage point? Where do you go against the grain of the world you live within? How might your ideas be valuable insight that others could benefit from? What is the most far-out vision you hold?

astrological insights

With Saturn in Aquarius through March 7, 2023, we’re wrapping up a 3 year cycle of challenges, renovations, and possible mastery (or the commitment towards the goal of mastery) in the area of the chart that Aquarius rules.

This New Moon offers a moment of initiative. With a sextile from Jupiter in Aries, there’s a sensation of an idea having the kind of practical and visionary potential that may just be sustainable & worth the risk.

This New Moon asks: What do you actually think/know/see… what have you learned? What is it that you have lived through that gives you the authority to build the map… to go for it.

This new moon offers a moment of expansion. You’ve got to believe in it, with a certainty. Bringing far out ideas to life requires that Saturnian commitment: endurance, tolerance for setbacks, a commitment to do the work, and a cool and collected sensibility to remain outside of consensus (or your comfort zone).

As it goes with New Moons, we’re planting seeds. Get curious about insights that arise, + take a stance on setting those intention. Begin by letting what rings true for you settle in.

Aquarian folks

In a quick search for noteworthy individuals with the Sun/Moon in Aquarius and Jupiter in Aries, I’ve linked some very interesting characters. It would be a disservice to their unique and even far out visions to try to sum up their creations, so explore for yourself if you’re curious.

Else Lasker-Schüler

Swami Rudrananda

As far as music goes… Aquarius Sun/Moon- We’ve got Ice-T, Birdman amongst others but my personal favorite… Roberta Flack. A timely remix was released yesterday (January 20, 2023) of her iconic performance of Killing Me Softly with His Song. But, the song was’t hers to begin with…

Roberta Flack: In 1972, I was on a flight from New York to Los Angeles and was listening to the plane’s music channels. That’s where I first heard Lori Lieberman’s version of “Killing Me Softly.” I probably heard it four times on the flight.

The lyrics were haunting and the chord changes were lush. I could feel the song and knew I could tell the song’s story my way.

Parts of the song reminded me of my life, of the pain that comes with loving someone deeply, of feeling moved by music, which is the universal language. More than anything, music makes us feel.As I listened, I jotted down the lyrics on a napkin. I also wrote down music lines and made notes on how I was going to arrange the song.”

And just like that Roberta told it her way (total aquarian move).

Noteworthy are the duets between Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. Roberta with the Sun/Moon/ASC in Aquarius seems to ignite a spark with the opposition of Donny’s Moon in Leo (and Libra Sun/stellium). Air & fire burn bright. On their duet album, the two artist perform a series of songs, writing some of the songs themselves. Together they wrote Be Real Black for Me. Donny wrote When Love has Grown. The final track on the album is written solely by Roberta. Mood closes the album on piano, the instrument she trained classically on & that first opened the door to her career as a performer. The song Baby I Love You won a grammy, and their album has been described as “understated elegance and simmering passion.”

As the moon moves through Aquarius today through the 23rd, it will make a trine to Mars in Gemini… picking up some information while Mars is still at its station degree of 8° Gemini. With that in mind, I’ll leave you with a mars in gemini native quote that sits nicely with the Aquarian vibes.

“Elegance is refusal”

— Coco Chanel

all creativity needs limitations. As Orsen Welles (moon in Aquarius) famously said, “The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.”
